First they came for . . .

~ First they came for prayer in schools, but I didn’t pray in school, so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for independent businesses to force them to run the business according to their demands and against the owners’ morals. I didn’t have a business so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for health insurance. They said we could keep our doctors. Instead, they forced us to change doctors and made insurance less affordable. I could afford my own doctor so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for Christians. They made a mockery of anyone who followed that faith, but I wasn’t a Christian so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for statues and American flags. Forced them to take them down.  I didn’t have a statue or a flag, so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they spied on journalists, and opposition campaigns and all who challenged government about transparency. I wasn’t a journalist, running a campaign, nor did I challenge for transparency, so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for conservatives’ right to speak out. They removed them off of social media, mocked, berated and belittled them. I wasn’t a conservative so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for guns. First they restricted only certain firearms, until finally they took away all guns. I didn’t own a gun so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next they came for conservatives and took them away, but I wasn’t a conservative, so I didn’t speak out.

~ Next, they came for me, and I didn’t have anyone left to speak for me.

Taken from 1950’s poem.
